Intel Demos Single Chip with 48 Cores

Intel's latest prototype could eventually see what you're doing while dancing in front of the monitor.

Intel announced that company researchers demonstrated an experimental, 48-core processor--dubbed the "single-chip cloud computer"--that will supposedly pave the way for future generations of processors. According to the company, the "concept chip" is aimed at scaling on-chip performance, communication, and power consumption. The new prototype also offers 10 to 20 times the processing engines found in today's Intel Core processors.

Despite its many cores, Intel says that the futuristic prototype chip will consume the same amount of energy as two standard household light bulbs thanks to newly invented power management techniques. Even more, Intel claims that the processor could eventually become sophisticated enough to let PCs use "vision" to interact with people.

"Imagine, for example, someday interacting with a computer for a virtual dance lesson or on-line shopping that uses a future laptop's 3-D camera and display to show you a "mirror" of yourself wearing the clothes you are interested in," the company said. "Twirl and turn and watch how the fabric drapes and how the color complements your skin tone. This kind of interaction could eliminate the need of keyboards, remote controls or joysticks for gaming. Some researchers believe computers may even be able to read brain waves, so simply thinking about a command, such as dictating words, would happen without speaking."

Intel also said that it deemed the prototype as the "single-chip cloud computer" because of its similarities with data centers organized in a group to create a "cloud" of computing. The prototype's 48 cores seemingly mimics the configuration of a cloud server system, however casts aside the physical distance and is reduced down to a piece of 45nm, high-k metal-gate silicon "about the size of a postage stamp."

NanoSSD Plugs Directly Into SATA Slot

Elecom Japan is launching two nanoSSDs in a few weeks that can plug into a SATA motherboard slot.

This seemed like utter coolness: an SSD that can plug directly into a SATA motherboard slot. Announced earlier today in Japan, Elecom's two new nanoSSDs--the ESD-IDSAA series--measures 25 x 39 x 6.5 mm, and could serve as a startup drive on a main system, or could even serve as a primary drive on a compact Mini-ITX system.

However, with the small size comes an even smaller storage capacity: 8 GB and 16 GB. Still, the drives offer decent read/write speeds, with read rates of up to 75 MB/sec. and write rates of up to 30 MB/sec. Unlike HDDs, the nanoSSDs feature minimal cooling requirements and are virtually quiet as a mouse.

The drives won't hit Japanese store shelves for another few weeks, and Elecom hasn't revealed pricing, however pre-orders are already underway. Akihabara News said that GeekStuff4U.com is scheduled to start selling the drives online in a couple of days.

ISRO loses contact with Chandrayaan, aborts; Nair hails it as a success

India’s grandest venture yet into the final frontier has drawn to a close, as the Chandrayaan-I lunar probe mission has been aborted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) after a communications malfunction.

Contact was lost with the probe two days ago and scientists at the ISRO were unable to restore communications, state-run broadcaster Doordarshan reported. The craft began orbiting the moon last November.

A malfunction in computers on board the spacecraft led to the failure in communications, which will be probed by a committee of scientists.

ISRO tried to send the commands but the space vehicle was not able to respond. “The power signals which go to the computer systems failed. We tried to recover the communications for the entire day yesterday.”

The mission was abandoned early on Saturday shortly after radio contact with the craft was abruptly lost at 0130 HRS.

“We don’t have contact with the spacecraft and we had to terminate the mission,” said a visibly disappointed ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair.

A NATIONAL TRIUMPH

Nair was still optimistic in his outlook and assessment of the whole mission, saying: “The mission was a great success. We survived for 315 days, which is a good record. Many such experiments have burnt within a month in the past.”

The scientist reported that 95 per cent of the Chandrayaan-I project’s objectives had been completed.

“We have found that all the instruments on the spacecraft worked satisfactorily and entire scientific instruments have performed that is how we could collect large volume of data,” Nair said.

The team was disappointed with the development, but the ISRO chief said the focus should be on the fact that they managed critical objectives, including sending the lunar probe, capturing 70,000 images of the moon and collaborating with US satellites.

The satellite is now likely to crash onto the moon’s surface. Meanwhile, ISRO is getting ready for their next project, Chandrayaan-II, scheduled to be launched in 2012.

[Hands-on Preview] Need for Speed: Shift

The Need For Speed series gets trifurcated from this year into arcade, simulation and free-online-play titles. And the first out of the new series to zoom out of the garage is the sim-based Shift, set to hit the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PSP on 17th September 2009.

The good for simulation racing fans is that NFS: Shift has been developed by Slightly Mad Studios, who were responsible for games such as GT Legends and GTR 2.

I got my hands on the PS3 version of the game at the EA India showcase, and the first change from the last NFS title (Underground) that I noticed was that new down-to-earth sim takes the races off the streets and onto circuits for a more realistic experience.

While I appreciate the effort, the gameplay does not quite live up to expectations. While the controls have stayed the game, the handling of cars has gotten kind of tricky. Turning at high speeds, especially, does tend to make you lose control of the car and cause you to naturally drift and bang right into the turn itself.

The graphics are top-notch, with real-time damage showing an effect on the car. While racing in perspective view, be careful about banging into someone as the glass will crack immediately!

Overall, the game is good, graphics are great, racing is more challenging and intense; but there are downsides to all this.

First, the storyline is non-existant, and admit it, we have all come to love (and expect) the deceit, betrayal, increasing street rep, taking over territories and other such elements in our racers.

And well, do you really want to slam the brakes while driving in an NFS game? I think I’ll wait for the arcade title, Nitro, to be released in November.

Browser Speed Tests: Latest Firefox Is Faster, but Not as Fast as Google Chrome

This is interesting...

As per PC-world tests, here is the ranking as per average time taken to load certain pages:

Chrome - 1.70 seconds
FF - 1.76
IE 8 - 1.83
Safari 4 - 1.96
Opera 10 beta (wouldn't count this as it is in beta stage) - 2.93

Anyways, Chrome still keeps its nose ahead in the race...

AMD Octacore processor to be released soon!!!!

Could an OCTA-CORE / DDR3 2133 BE YOUR NEW EXTREME DREAM?

AMD and Intel have a Glass Ceiling of about 5 ghz. before meltdown for the future chips under their current technology curb, so if you can't go up, where DO you go? You go out.
Imagine a (8 core) octocore processor made on the 45 nm. process that was good for about 2.9 ghz. base speed and slated for introduction in late 2009 and then pulled back and shelved due to the surfacing of their newer 32 nm. Magny-Cours 12 core processor. No more need for an octocore processor based on the 45 nm. process. Or is there?
I believe that you will be seeing an octocore 45 nm. 1207 processor in mid 2010. I have absolutely no way to back up this claim except for two things. This processor was manufactured and the Orochi 32 nm Quad core is not slated until 2011 so what do you do in the meantime.

Well it is my OPINION that the 1207 octocore may come out as a workstation or maybe even an Enthusist Chip. Extreme Edition AMD? Could you imagine.. An AMD Extreme Chip. Could it Be? AweSome....!

Okay lets quit dreaming for a minute and look a little closer at this...

Google Chrome Operating System

It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

We have a lot of work to do, and we're definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision. We're excited for what's to come and we hope you are too. Stay tuned for more updates in the fall and have a great summer.

Oracle to Buy Sun

SANTA CLARA, Calif. April 20, 2009 Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) and Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.

"We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle's earnings by at least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing. We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion to Oracle's non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over $2 billion in the second year. This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share contribution in the first year than we had planned for the acquisitions of BEA, PeopleSoft and Siebel combined," said Oracle President Safra Catz.

"The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. "Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system - applications to disk - where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up."

There are substantial long-term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris. Java is one of the computer industry's best-known brands and most widely deployed technologies, and it is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired. Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle's fastest growing business, is built on top of Sun's Java language and software. Oracle can now ensure continued innovation and investment in Java technology for the benefit of customers and the Java community.

The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle database, Oracle's largest business, and has been for a long time. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris. Oracle is as committed as ever to Linux and other open platforms and will continue to support and enhance our strong industry partnerships.
"Oracle and Sun have been industry pioneers and close partners for more than 20 years," said Sun Chairman Scott McNealy. "This combination is a natural evolution of our relationship and will be an industry-defining event."

"This is a fantastic day for Sun's customers, developers, partners and employees across the globe, joining forces with the global leader in enterprise software to drive innovation and value across every aspect of the technology marketplace," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, "From the Java platform touching nearly every business system on earth, powering billions of consumers on mobile handsets and consumer electronics, to the convergence of storage, networking and computing driven by the Solaris operating system and Sun's SPARC and x64 systems. Together with Oracle, we'll drive the innovation pipeline to create compelling value to our customer base and the marketplace."

"Sun is a pioneer in enterprise computing, and this combination recognizes the innovation and customer success the company has achieved. Our largest customers have been asking us to step up to a broader role to reduce complexity, risk and cost by delivering a highly optimized stack based on standards," said Oracle President Charles Phillips. "This transaction will preserve and enhance investments made by our customers, while we continue to work with our partners to provide customers with choice."

The Board of Directors of Sun Microsystems has unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

Nokia phone recharges without wires!

Pardon the cliche, but it's one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power. And while early lab experiments have been able to "beam" electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

While "traditional" (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia's system isn't finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems -- all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone's battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there's no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It's the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn't be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it's in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power -- provided you're not stuck deep underground where radio waves can't penetrate.

Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five years.

Microsoft to unveil free anti-virus software

Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for personal computers that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc.

A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world's biggest software maker is testing an early version of the product with its own employees. Microsoft would "soon" make a trial version, or product beta, available via its website, he added, but declined to provide a specific date.

Symantec shares fell 0.5 percent on Nasdaq and McAfee fell 1.3 percent on the New York Stock Exchange, while Microsoft was up 2.1 percent. The Nasdaq composite index was down 0.47 percent.

Investors are closely monitoring the free service, code-named Morro after Brazil's Morro de Sao Paolo beach, amid concern it could hurt sales of products from Symantec and McAfee, which generate billions of dollars of revenue a year protecting Windows PCs from attacks by hackers.

"It's a long-term competitive threat," said Daniel Ives, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets, though he added that the near-term impact was minimal.

Microsoft has said that Morro will offer basic features for fighting a wide range of viruses, which would likely make it comparable to low-end consumer products from Symantec and McAfee that cost about $40 per year.

10 Most Dangerous Web Search Terms Revealed

Web searches including terms like lyrics, free music downloads are most likely to put your computer at risk of virus or even malicious software, for security firm McAfee, Inc. has listed these words as some of the most dangerous search terms on the internet.

In a recent report, McAfee has revealed Web search terms that put users most at risk for accidentally downloading unwanted or malicious software.

The report, titled 'The Web's Most Dangerous Search Terms', reveals that the researchers analysed over 2,600 of the most popular search terms of 2008 from a range of sources, including the Google Zeitgeist and the Yahoo! 2008 Year in Review.Search engines are our on-ramp, our highway and our off-ramp -- they're everything for Web travel. The hacking community is very smart-they can spot a trend as well as any trendspotter," the Telegraph quoted Shane Keats, the research analyst with McAfee who led the study, as saying.

After analysing the search terms, the researchers found that hackers looking for crowds.

They are also attacking Internet surfers who are ready to take an online action, like downloading a ringtone or logging in to a site with a name, address and social security number.

For example, people searching for free music downloads are easy targets for hackers because they are expecting to download an mp3.

In order to evaluate the risk associated with each keyword, the researchers looked at the search results generated by each keyword, and then calculated the percentage of links that would take users to Web sites with unwanted adware, spyware or other malicious software.

For example, the term "lyric," had an average risk of 14.8 percent, meaning that nearly 15 out of 100 search results would take users to risky sites.

The most dangerous categories of search terms include online games, free downloads, song lyrics, and screensavers.

Search terms involving online games were among the riskiest because online games often prompt users to install plug-ins or register with a name or e-mail address.

Keywords that include lyrics were risky because Web sites featuring the words to songs sometimes host links that take users to sites with unwanted pop-up ads or spyware.

The 10 Most Dangerous Web Searches in the United States are:
1. Word Unscrambler
2. Lyrics
3. MySpace
4. Free Music Downloads
5. Phelps, Weber-Gale, Jones and Lezak Wins 4x 100m Relay
6. Free Music
7. Game Cheats
8. Printable Fill in Puzzles
9. Free Ringtones

Microsoft Shows Official Windows 7 Box Art

Simple and clean.
Last month, Polish website CentrumXP posted several box shots of Windows 7. We weren’t sure if they were just mockups or just very exclusive and early leaks – but it turns out that they were on the money.
On Microsoft’s Store is a preview page for Windows 7. While pricing remains a mystery, it seems that the boxes will look something like this:

What do you think of Microsoft's multiple SKUs of Windows 7? Do you think Microsoft should just sell one consumer version of Windows for one flat price?

Samsung debuts first 32GB DDR3 memory module

Samsung has been making promises about a 32GB DDR3 memory module since it rolled out its first 50nm 4Gb DDR3 memory chip way back in January, but it looks like it's now finally delivered. While it won't be headed for regular desktops or laptops just yet, the company does have a new 1.35 volt 32GB module for servers which, in addition to packing that record-breaking capacity, also boasts a 20% better throughput compared to previous 1.5 volt modules and, of course, a lower power consumption to boot. As some math not performed by us will reveal, the module itself is made up of 72 of those 4Gb memory chips, which are lined up in rows of nine quad-die packaged 16Gb DDR3s mounted on each side of the circuit board. No word on pricing just yet, nor is there any word about Samsung's promised desktop and laptop memory, which are apparently still in the works -- in the form of 8GB DIMMs, at least.
